This paper is motivated by the reality that often occurs in the midst of society, and it turns out that Islamic education still needs to be improved so that there is an evolution in learning and Islamic values can be embedded in every Muslim. Every student should be expected to be able to actualize the learning outcomes that have been received, but there is often an imbalance in it which does not lead to motivation from students to actualize Islamic teachings. To respond to this, the researcher wrote about the characteristics of Islamic education with the aim to achieve include: (1) To find out the definition of Islamic religious education, (2) To find out the characteristics of Islamic religious education. The result of this research is the science of Islamic education which is contained in the Qur'an, sunnah, and ijtihad. Islamic education is a field of Islamic studies that has received a lot of attention from scientists. The basic concept of Islamic education is divided into three, namely tarbiyah ta'lim and ta'dib. Tarbiyah is the development of improvement, elevation, advantages, and improvements. Taklim is teaching, which is giving or assisting the understanding of knowledge and skills. Ta'dib is an educational process that focuses on fostering and perfecting morals or character. Meanwhile, the characteristics and nature of Islamic education are upheld on the basis of scientific principles as in other scientific disciplines which have clear, logical objects, have a systematic structure, have specific methods and have empirical evidence which cumulatively will continue to grow.
